The doctoral research project approaches the subject of microfinance from the field of poverty research, working with an understanding of poverty based on Amartya Sen. Microfinance and its current commercialization can signify important opportunities as well as considerable risks to the poor. The central aim of the doctoral thesis has been to elaborate a comprehensive framework for assessing microfinance as a tool for pro-poor financial sector development and apply it ultimately to the case of Peruvian microfinance.
