Project: "Decolonial Queer Politics: Queer Aspirations and Anti-Violence Struggles in Latin America"
Supervisor:
Prof. Dr. Sérgio Costa, Freie Universität Berlin
This Ph.D. project proposes a sociological study of aspirations and temporalities of the future articulated by Latin American queer movements fighting cis-heteronormative violence and its entangled inequalities with race, class, and gender. In dialogue with sociological, decolonial, and queer of color theories, the project proposes the investigation of the emergence, in Buenos Aires (Argentine) and Bogotá (Colombia), of legal innovations and critical queer political practices that construct specific horizons of future in tension with and beyond the liberal imaginary of sexuality and the globalization of neoliberal and prison-based strategies to counter violence. Through discourse analysis of legal normatives and social movement documents, participant observation of their protests and meetings, and interviews with activists in Bogotá and Buenos Aires, the project aims to understand which aspirations have been produced in those social struggles and how they have been shaping the temporalities of future in Latin America.
