Project: "Future aspirations and scholarly levels of Second-Generation Young Mexican Immigrants in the United States of America"
Supervisor: Dr. Lorenza Villa Lever, IIS-UNAM
This research aims to understand how second-generation of young Mexican immigrants create their future aspirations on inequality contexts in the United States of America and carry out a comparative analysis between who have acceded to tertiary education level and who have stayed out of school. During the comparison, the research attempts to find what extreme life situations and vital chances affect their trajectories, what kind of circumstances define stay in or out of the higher education, how young interpret the uncertainties and how do they act in order to define their future aspirations.
Major of immigrant young people have high expectations and desires to continue their education after High School despite of their low possibilities. However, the transition rate to higher education levels remains low. This can be caused by the complexities of the education system in the United States, the confusions for access to financing and contrast between the optimistic thought and the lack of awareness about complex realities in a country that assumes the narrative “the land of opportunity”, while deep inequalities remain. Here there are a permanent fight between the capabilities to aspire and real conditions in inequality contexts.
Thus, we can ask: How does second-generation of young Mexican immigrants that are studying tertiary education in the United States of America create their future aspirations? How do create them who are out of tertiary education? In what manner migrant backgrounds of the families and current socio-cultural contexts are related in future aspirations creation? To answering these questions, the life stories of young people will be recovered in their three temporalities: 1) family and migration background; 2) status and current conditions of young people and their families and 3) the creating processes of their future aspirations.
