Images of Freedom: Colonial history, gender, and the political body

This lecture is based on two almost equal pictures, that were showed in two completely different contexts, without further references among them. The first one was painted by the German artist Theodor Kaufmann – “On to liberty” (1867) – and presented in New York. The second one was painted by the French caricaturist François Biard and was called “Fuga de escravos” (Escape of slaves), in 1859. Having this painting as pretexts, the lecture aims to explore the concept of the “present of the past”. Colonial archives and museums are full of silences. Silences in the internal histories of the paintings. Silences among bodies depicted by “others”.
