Project: 'The political relations between Mexico and Spain regarding the exile of the Basque people to Mexico'
Supervisors: Prof. Dr. Günther Maihold (Freie Universität Berlin), Prof. Dr. Marianne Braig (Freie Universität Berlin)
The topic of the dissertation project is the negotiation process regarding the Basque exile to Mexico at the end of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century. Previous investigations of the Basque exile tend to concentrate on earlier centuries or on the exile following the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). The chosen time period has hardly been investigated, despite the decisive influence of the political events of the last decades on life in exile: Spain's transition, from dictatorship to democracy in the 70's, not only caused profound changes in the Spanish society, but also redefined the political relations on an international level. Finally, the 'normalization' of diplomatic relations between Spain and Mexico contributed to rebuilding the handling of the Basque community in Mexico, as well as the political, social and legal conditions of exile itself. The investigation aims at tracing this negotiation process regarding the Basque exile, considering the positions and evolution of the domestic policies and of foreign affairs in Spain and Mexico. Moreover, it includes the analysis of the actors and factors that determined the previously described process.
