Between Spaces: Transregional Interdependencies
The exploration of transregional interdependencies from the perspective of different actors reveals new ways of analyzing the Latin-American region and its historical and current embeddedness in a global context. The predominant focus is on the transnational and transregional linkages, interactions and power relations between the Americas and Europe and other regions outside of Europe, as well as between the Americas themselves. The impact of globalization processes is further examined in its local, regional and national dimensions. This permits the disclosure of the completely contradictory spatial formation processes, which are reflected in society, culture, economy and politics. The transnational and transregional approach should be understood as a way of expanding and bringing new perspectives to the contemporary debate. This perspective is supported by historically informed analyses of processes of interdependencies between places and regions, which – as the treatment of Latin America as a transnational/transregional context of interdependencies clearly shows – have developed and continue to develop as cultural, economic and socio-political spaces beyond, above and below nation-state boundaries. This approach is innovative because it centers on the relationship between space and movement from the actor’s point of view and the representations of the newly emerging between-spaces.
