Memory places in Latin America
Institute for Latin American Studies
Thyssen-Stiftung, Research committee of the FU Berlin
In our project we will analyze changes in the Latin American memorial history over the past 30 years or so, beginning from the background of the specific history of Latin America, understood here as a “western society,” and of different national stories. Case studies will explore how national narratives functionalize and promote hegemonically certain developments over others for the collective memory as well as those opposed to this functionalization. The historical method will reveal competing interpretations, identities, and groups in search of legitimacy for their own origin myths and memories and which challenge the temporal dimensions of the tradition national narrative. The project will address the question of how such new groups deal with the historical memory of the nation and what they claim, exclude, and change.
