Project: "Social mobility projections in elite MBA programs in Mexico"
Previous research has shown that Mexico is a country with high social inequality and deep poverty. There, the unchosen conditions of social origin strongly impact life outcomes of individuals. For instance, those born on the most disadvantaged side of the economic distribution are likely to remain in that position regardless of their efforts. Under such an unpromising context, however, elite MBA programs depict bright futures for their students. They claim that those who take their classes will reach top positions within the occupational hierarchy, whether as senior managers or business owners. Hence, MBAs train economic subjects who will be the future protagonists of capitalism’s management (Orta, 2013).
In this project, I analyze the symbolic resources (frames and narratives) used by elite MBA programs and students in the configuration of future scenarios of upward social mobility. In order to do so, I designed a methodological strategy based on the triangulation between semi-structured interviews and participant observation. The first technique gives me access to the arguments behind students’ projections. In turn, the second technique allows me to approach situations where, through the arrangement of spaces and interventions of key agents, the promise of mobility is performed.
With this project, I aim to expand our knowledge on the imaginary of the Mexican elite, a realm of research that was neglected for a long time albeit important contributions do exist. By delving into that realm, I seek to understand elite projections of the future and the underlying image of resource distribution that accompanies them. The latter is largely possible due to the guide of my advisor, PhD Alice Krozer.
